I came across a statistic the other day that shocked me: only about 10% of U.S. citizens have a passport. While I know that Americans are often criticized for ignorance about the rest of the world, I didnt realize just how little we get out and about!I know of very few things that can provide the genuine education and adventure that comes with international travel: the fascinating views, the unfamiliar smells, the undecipherable languages, the unidentifiable foods, the interesting people.
It is almost a cliche to say that travel broadens ones horizons, but sometimes cliches are as true as they are literal. Myopic, insular, narrow views cannot but be blasted by the wide vistas of the rest of the world "out there."I will not try and convince you, however, to dust off the suitcases and buy a ticket to somewhere. Instead, I would like to present to you my random list of things to know so that your international travel is the best it can be. Every year more and more people are hitting the road for some freedom, adventure and a little relaxation. Unfortunately, every year insurance claims, assaults, and missing persons are also rising in direct relation to more mobile homes and campers on the roads. There is no need to decide against travel because life is full of risks, but what we can do to ensure we have a safer and more enjoyable experience is to make security basics a habit. Do you know what the biggest crimes are on the road? The biggest one: Site theft from parks/truck stops - unlocked doors windows, gear left unattended, clothes on the line, cars left unlocked. Who does these crimes? Opportunists, children, youth, people who manage to walk through parks unattended, and other park users who make it a small business to steal from inside the facility without being detected. How do we stop this form of crime? This is achieved by not taking security for granted and saying oh that just happens to other people Yes, it does and most likely that will be you. We need to lock up, think about what we have left lying around, and think about what we have inside the vehicles. Do we have expensive and easy to transport gear in front of windows? Money or wallets/handbags on view? Gear on the top on the vans? Alternatively, gear loosely secured to the outside of our vans? Yes, we all do in some form.A good practice is to clearly mark all items with an engraver tool and have a sticker on your window stating that all gear has been marked for police identification. Originally used for fishing, or transporting goods along the southern coast of Turkey, the elegant lines of the two-masted wooden gulet cut a very different swathe through the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean in those days than they do today. Every year in the summer months, thousands of people come to Turkey to enjoy the delights of gulet holidays of a very modern type. Gone are the days of all work and no play aboard these traditional schooner vessels, and in their place are lazy days of leisure, and relaxing evenings spent drifting warm waters and admiring the inimitable beauty of the Turquoise Coast.Food ThenWhen they were first used, thousands of years ago, the gulets transported precious cargo of olive oil and wine up and down the coast. Many of the sailors and traders who worked these routes were migrants and their origins would have heavily influenced the cuisine on board. There would probably have been some North Africans who would have brought the heavy spices and fruits and nuts of the region; and there was likely to have been some seamen of European and Asian origin who would have added their own slant on ingredients. It would have been simple but flavoursome fare on board, using the abundance of fresh seafood caught along the way and the wonderful fusion of cultures provided by the crew.Food NowToday, from the moment you step on board for your gulet holidays, until the moment you leave, you will be plied with meals fit for the Sultan of the Ottoman empire for whom much of traditional Turkish cuisine was created. It was March, 1987, and my wife and I had just been dropped off at our hotel after a sweaty, white-knuckle ride in a taxi from the airport in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The lobby of the hotel was gorgeous, making a great first impression. Although the hotel was modern by all standards, the lobby area was jungle- rus.ru> rustic and had been built of poles and beams in what I guessed was a traditional method of building a structure that you might find in the jungles of the region. The roof soared 30-40 feet high and was made of thatched palm leaves. Very cool, so far so good.We were anxious to get checked in and change our clothes into our swim suits. Then we planned to hit the beach and have our first of what would be many frozen margaritas. Then we planned to hit the beach and have our first of what would be many frozen margaritas. |
